~ would you like to have coffee? ~

11 August 2003

as my dad and i arrived at the Flinders station, we noticed a huge banner on the top of the sandwich stand where we usually get our breakfast. the banner says:

“We Now Serve Coffee. Grinders Coffee.” … or something like that.

as we walked closer, one of the guy behind the counter approached us and ask us if he could help us. my dad was just pointing to one of the sandwiches and opened his mouth to say something, the counter guy was being pulled away by another guy whom i’ve never seen. that guy turned out to be either the manager or the owner of the sandwich stand.

manager: “remember, it’s not May I help you… it’s Would you like a cup of coffee today…!

counter guy: “yes, i understand”

manager: “no you don’t. repeat it with me, Would you like a cup of coffee today?”

counter guy: “Would you like a cup of coffee today?

manager: “once again…”

counter guy: “Would you like a cup of coffee today?

manager: “okay, now.. go!”

my dad and i were amused and couldn’t stop giggling on the other side of the counter when the guy approached, smiled and winked at us and said, “Would you like a cup of coffee today?”

i’ve never thought these sandwich/coffee stands around the station would have a strict manager. i’ve never really thought they would have an obligated opening line. i guess, having three other sandwich/coffee stand around in the station heightened the competition.

my dad didn’t get the coffee, since he’s not a coffee drinker. but i took the offer and had the “small coffee and donut” package. the coffee turned out great.
