~ possum problem ~

21 February 2003

three nights ago, noushka and i were sitting on the back porch, talking and smoking cigarettes. the porch is facing the backyard, where there is high wall on our right, dividing us with the back road, and high wooden fence on the left that meets with our neighbor’s backyard.

all the sudden, we heard the sound of a thing running along the wooden fence, then *bam*… the thing hit something and fell into the backyard, rolling next to the tree near the fence. the thing quickly got up, ran in panic across the yard to the other wall, ran back, stand in the middle of the yard and looked at me and noushka (who stared back in shock). the thing blinked…

… it was a biiiig possum.

in pictures and calendars, possums are cute. in real life, especially in the dark, it looked a bit vicious. so, i whispered to noushka, “i think we better go in… c’mon! hurry!” and i ran, leaving noushka who were still staring blankly at the possum… in about half second later, noushka tried to run in, but hit me instead, since i was standing over the door… the possum ran to the tree, trying to climb up and go over the fence,but fell to the ground on its first try.

so, the three of us (me, noush and possum) were running, falling, struggling and panicking… i ran and woke my mom up, to let her know that we had possum trapped in our backyard, noush went in, close the glass door and watched the possum trying so hard to get his fat-ass up the tree and over the fence. it finally made it and dissapeared in the dark.

anyways, the possum seemed to like us. it now shows up every night. it even brought a few friends with him. last night, the medium-sized one were spotted walking along the fence. it didn’t fall to our backyard, though. tonight, the smaller size one were munching the neighbor’s tree leaves for a good 15 minutes and walked at our garage roof.

my mom is now convinced that the possum family is the reason why she never seen any olive on her olive trees. do possums like olives?

ps: our new socks: split-toes. noush just bought them today. i feel like a ninja.

Interesting story with the possum :) now I believe they’re pretty common here, once a possum ran into my brother while he was in the city area at night. I’ve never properly looked at a picture of a possum until couple weeks ago, they look like rats (except bigger) o_O;;

fel — at the beginning, we thought the possum was a rat, an oversized rat, that is… but when we looked at the face, then we realized it was no rat. heheh.

I bet they are as scary as racoons. Boy they have some sharp claws.

Everyone’s getting those socks, it would bug the hell out of my big toe to be honest.
