~ releasing the turtles ~

03 August 2002

so, today is the day. we’re gonna release our turtles who’s been living with us for the past 2 and a half years. they came in as big as the size of a quarter, and now they barely fit in the aquarium.

anyways, the release went very smooth. i was the worry one (that the container is being too small, the turtles would be very unhappy for our 1 hour trip to the Turtle Pond, they would be too hot waiting for the subway… the list goes on.), and ari was the calm one. when he was moving from Japan back to Indonesia, he carried and hid his turtles in his backpack in a 7-hour flight. so, i thought i should just trust him.

if you want to take a look at the photos of the release, here they are.

after we release the turtles in Turtle Pond at Central Park, we went to the podium on the other side of the pond to watch more turtles. people were throwing bread crumbs into the pond, right next to a sign asking not to feed the animals (oh, people…). and there we saw a big snapping turtle feasting on the crumbs, along with ducks, fish and many smaller turtles. yikes, we didn’t know that there is snapping turtle in that pond… we started wondering if there is small alligators there as well. and i started whinning that our little turtles won’t be able to defend themselves, especially the sweet Tutey. so ari spent the next few minutes diverting the conversation to a different topic.

as we walked around Central Park, we encountered more animals: a strange looking squirrel who wants to be fed, two raccoons climbing up the trees…

it was a nice walk. and i’m happy that my turtles (actually, they’re ari’s) can have a much larger place to swim around.
